OSHA 2023 Region-VI Trench Safety Initiative

During Fiscal Years (FY) 2020 – 2022 there were approximately nine fatal and eight serious injury cave-in incidents reported to Region-VI OSHA. Cave-ins pose a serious risk to workers and are more likely than some other excavation-related incidents to result in a worker fatality or serious injury. One cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car and an unprotected trench can be an early grave.
